In a memorandum to the Union Railway Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and other higher authorities of Indian Railways, the members of Rourkela Development Forum & Rourkela Railfanning Association have urged for the creation of a new East Coast Railway Division headquartered at Rourkela.
Justifying their demand they have mentioned that Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Kendujhargarh districts of Odisha , account for the heavy revenue generated by Chakradharpur Division of South Eastern Railway Zone, but unfortunately remain the most neglected regions in comparison to rail connectivity and facilities in other parts of the country. The mineral rich Chotanagpur Plateau region popularly known as “Ruhr of India” due to its innumerable industries and mines, comprises of the mineral rich Sundargarh, Kendujhargarh and Jharsuguda Districts of Odisha from where Iron Ore and other minerals are transported throughout the country. Further the region houses a number of heavy industries like Rourkela Steel Plant, OCL-Rajgangpur; Adhunik Metalliks; L&T- Kansbahal , Bhusan Steel and Power; Vedanta etc. which pay a huge amount to the railways for transportation of raw materials as well as finished products. Hence a lot of freight activity is noticed in this region, which has made Chakradharpur Division the highest revenue generating division in the country, a number of times.

Could anyone please give a update when we can have night trains between Rourkela and Kharagpur . Also some of the trains are running by diverted routes .No one is taking any step to normalize the situation . Things can not b pathetic than this .. It is rightly said by Ravi Shankar "India is running by SCAMS ans SLAMS"
It is very hard to believe that the administration is not sure when they can run the train at night ... Every now and then people are suffering and that should not be matter to the Railway minister or any other officials. This is so shameful .Just shame on them that they can not give security to the night trains. When the Railway minister can not give enough security to the trains what will she give to the West Bengal people that's a serious doubt in everyone's mind ...

A lot of changes are noticed at Rourkela Junction, when any senior authority of Railways visits here, which was showcased recently when DRM of Chakradharpur Division Shri A.Khare visited Rourkela. Railway authorities have paid special attention to sanitation and others issues ,before the DRM’s visit and also instructed the employees to keep the station premises perfectly neat and clean. Security forces like RPF were on special move to keep the beggars and vendors out of station so that they don’t create any rush in the premises. Also special care was taken for parking.
DRM,Chakradharpur was invited by Railways Mens Congress to inaugurate the new office of the organization near the station. Besides the members of Mens Congress many leaders of the Congress also met the DRM. However after the DRM left everything was again out of track. Many people have expressed concerns on fulfilling of the demands by the new DRM, as the demands made with his predecssor Ravindra Gupta are still pending |

The chaotic train services on the busy Howrah-Mumbai route of the South Eastern Railway (SER) continue to pile untold miseries on passengers.
The SER continues to suspend train services on the Rourkela-Kharagpur and Kharagpur-Adra sections between 10 pm and 5 am after the derailment of the Jnaneswari Express on May 28, which was attributed to the sabotage by Maoists. Worse, the SER is not sure about restoration of normalcy. Unofficial sources said disorderly train timings are unlikely to be corrected before the West Bengal Assembly poll. It is learnt, all trains leaving for Howrah have been timed before 12 pm. Similarly, except the Mumbai-bound Gitanjali Express and Kurla Express which leave before 12 pm, majority of trains depart from Howrah by 6 am. At least 23 pairs of Express trains make to and fro journeys between the two state capitals with Rourkela being a key junction. Rourkela station witnesses passenger footfalls of above 14,000 daily. The business community which earlier had the luxury of returning to Rourkela city in 36 hours, are now forced to make two night halts at Howrah. Moreover, Rourkela city passengers also have to take the extra effort of travelling to Jharsuguda, around 120 km, as the Puri-Delhi Utkal Express remains diverted to the Jharsuguda-Sambalpur-Cuttack. Meanwhile, a fresh SER communication has again come up with new timings effective till August 25 which is certain to get extended. As per the SER, several key trains like Howrah-Mumbai Mail, Howrah-Pune Azad Hind Express, Howrah-LTT Jnaneswari Express, Howrah-Porbandar/Okha Express, Howrah-LTT Samarsata Express, Puri-Guwahati Express, Puri-Patna Baidyanathdham Express, Orissa Sampark Kranti Express, Chennai-Dibrugarh Express, Chennai-Guwahati Express and Patna-Ernakulam Express have been re-scheduled.

In lieu of "security reasons" , the most popular trains of Rourkela , Puri-Haridwar Kalinga Utkal Express and Koraput-Howrah Samaleswari Express have been diverted since the last two and half months, which has caused a lot of inconvenience for the people of Sundargarh district. Since there is no direct connection to Delhi ,people are suffering a lot and hence Railroad Users Association has demanded the plying of Kalinga Utkal Express via Rourkela,Chakradharpur, Chaibasa and Kendujhargarh.
In a memorandum submitted to the new DRM of Chakradharpur Division, Shri A. Khare, the organization has requested him to pay attention towards the plight of the people of Sundargarh. Kalinga Utkal Express has been diverted on Jharsuguda-Sambalpur-Angul-Cuttack route after the Jnaneswari mishap and hence Rourkela has lost its only train to Delhi. Hence the organization has requested the new DRM to divert this train on Jharsuguda-Rourkela-Chakradharpur-Chaibasa-Kendujhargarh route so that the people of tribal districts of Sundargarh,West Singhbhum and Kendujhargarh will get the advantage of a direct railway connection to the national capital. Similarly a special train is plying between Rourkela and Jharsuguda as an alternative to Howrah-Koraput Samaleswari Express. This train leaves Rourkela at 4:40 am and reaches Jharsuguda at 6:35 am. The organization has demanded this train to be extended to Sambalpur so that people from Rourkela-Sundargarh-Jharsuguda can board Sambalpur-Nizamabad Nagawali Express which departs Sambalpur at 9 am and is the only train to Hyderabad from Western Odisha. Similarly people will also get the facility of boarding other trains to Bhubaneswar and Titlagarh from Sambalpur, especially the daily commuters between Rourkela and Sambalpur would be benefitted.

Railway Budget Discussion in Rajya Sabha
(What was demanded for Rourkela-Sundargarh) Congress MP Ramachandra Khuntia demanded more fund allocation in the railway budget for the early completion of the railway projects in Odisha. The major routes were Khurda Road-Bolangir, Talcher-Bimalagarh,Haridaspur-Paradweep. BJD MP Mangala Kishan regretted the low budget allocation for the ongoing projects in the state. He stated that the surveys for Lanjigarh-Junagarh(56 kms.) in 1993-94 , Khurda Road-Bolangir(289 kms.) in 1994-95, Haridaspur-Paradweep(82 kms.) in 1996-97,Anugul-Duburi-Sukinda Road(90 kms.) in 1997-98 and Talcher-Bimalagarh(154 kms.) in 2004-05 were completed but the way the funds are allocated in the railway budgets, these projects will take around 100 years to be completed. He demanded more allocation of funds for all these ongoing projects. Also he demanded a survey for a new railway line between Jharsuguda and Ambikapur via Sundargarh district headquarter. Among the trains demanded by him were Duronto Express trains on Bhubaneswar-Pune,Puri-Mumbai,Puri-Jodhpur and Rourkela-Ajmer routes. The other trains included Puri-Kannyakumari Express,Rourkela-Delhi Express and Visakhapatnam-Allahabad Superfast Express via Titlagarh.
